Although I said I wouldn't be blogging until certain issues have been resolved. Seeing our special PM on the news the last three nights spruiking nuclear power as the solution to all our greenhouse woes. I felt angry enough to compose the following points to ponder.
It is true that nuclear power plants have very low emissions in comparison to coal plants however nuclear reactors need a lot of water to run and unlike coal you can't release that water back into the environment, so how does that solve the water crisis facing everyone in this country? Also constructing one would produce greenhouse gas emissions from the use of heavy construction equipment.
Mining uranium usually involves pumping water with a high concentration of uranium to the surface or using high pressure cutting hoses to mine ore bodies. Water crisis again.
Also what most people don't know is that at present rates of usage there is only enough uranium on earth to last the next 85 years.
So I hear you ask how does this solve our long term energy needs? Well believe it or not you can actually recycle spent fuel rods. But wheres the catch I hear you ask? Well you have to build another type of reactor called a breeder reactor
Unforntunately that was one of the best articles on it I could find outside of one of my text books so take it with a grain of salt, the authors pro nuclear stance is very obvious as is his glossing over of the negative aspects.
But then again this rant is mainly to state my own point of view (re: The PM is a fucking idiot) and to provide a little information for people to make an informed decision or at the least to go looking for more information.
But Mr Howard to paraphrase if you think technology will solve all your problems you don't understand the technology and you don't understand the problem.
